Online Character and Word Counter
A character counter helps you check the length of your text and stay within required limits. It is useful in several cases:
- SEO specialists and webmasters: for title and description meta tags, which have recommended lengths (roughly up to 60 and 160 characters respectively), so search engines don't truncate the snippet.
- Copywriters and editors: on freelance marketplaces and in orders, the volume is most often measured in characters without spaces.
- Social media managers and marketers: for posts, captions, ads, and SMS messages with a character limit.
- Students and schoolchildren: to meet the required length of a paper, essay, or composition.
The tool shows the number of characters with and without spaces and the word count, and it also highlights extra double spaces.
No, the counter has no artificial limits on text length. The counting is done right in your browser, so the maximum size depends only on the performance of your device.
Regular articles, books, and large documents are processed without any issues. With very large volumes (millions of characters), counting may take a bit longer, especially on low-end smartphones and older computers.
No. Characters and words are counted right in your browser, and the text you enter is not sent to the server.
Your text is saved only if you click the "Save text to history" button yourself (available to logged-in users).
A word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks that contains at least one letter or digit. Several spaces in a row count as a single separator, and spaces at the beginning and end of the text are ignored.
- Hyphenated words count as one word: "mother-in-law", "well-known", "e-commerce" (1 word each).
- Dashes and other standalone symbols are not counted as words: "Paris — the capital" (2 words). If there are no spaces ("Paris—capital"), it is one word.
- Numbers count as regular words: "2026", "3.14", "+1-555-123-4567" (1 word each).
- Abbreviations and addresses depend on spaces: "example.com" is 1 word, while "U. S. A." is 3 words.
The result may differ slightly from the count in Word, Google Docs, or on a copywriting marketplace, because each program has its own rules for handling hyphens, dashes, and punctuation.
